Freedom Slipped Away

I was talking to my grandson
About life, the other day,
There was no way to prepare myself
For what he was about to say.

He asked me what freedom was
And when it had disappeared.
I knew this day was coming-
It was something that I feared

I looked into that child’s eyes and said-

I was too caught up in the daily grind
Livin’ my life from day to day
I wasn’t paying attention, Son,
As our freedoms were slipping away

He said,

“You couldn’t see what was happening
in your very own Country?
Or what your lack of attention
Was going to mean for me?”

“What were you so busy doing, Grandpa,
That caused you not to see?
What was more important,
Than making sure that I’d always be free?”

I was too caught up in the daily grind
Livin’ my life from day to day
I wasn’t paying attention, Son,
As our freedoms were slipping away…..

Tears of shame ran down my face
There were no words to say
How do you apologize for something so wrong
And for which future generations will pay?

I was too caught up in the daily grind
Livin’ my life from day to day
I wasn’t paying attention, Son,
As our freedoms were slipping away…..
